Expulsive Stage

During the expulsive stage the child is born. This is the most exciting and at the same time the most strenuous part of the birth process. The expulsive stage can last varying amounts of time, usually longer (over an hour) for the first baby. The body remembers earlier deliveries, and on the mental level, the mother knows what will happen so it is easier to "let the child come".

With most births, there is a brief transition phase between the dilatation and the expulsive stage, when everything stops -the calm before the storm. That is the first sign. Then the laboring mother feels strong pressure on the rectum and an uncontrollable urge to push. With these strong sensations, the body takes over.

Some women find it easier to cope at this point, because they can become more actively involved. By bearing down with the abdominal muscles, they can bring their child into the world. In contrast to the dilatation stage, the laboring mother focuses more on the pressure and less on the contractions.

To find the right birthing position, trust your instinct. You will have to try and see for yourself which position is the most comfortable for you. Many laboring mothers find sitting or squatting very comfortable. Others are more at ease lying down. These days, there are many alternatives, ranging from simple birthing aids to sophisticated technologies.
